I really enjoy hardsurface sculpting these days. A year ago I would've punched it in the face.

Very nice. Hard surface is tricky but rewarding. Well, much trickier if you do it as a freeform Sub-D due to the limitations. I can't sculpt to save my life :|

Oh yes the two weeks I was actively learning it were absolute hell. But the more I know, the more I enjoy it.

Two weeks is so fast O_O. The whole Zbrush interface just baffles me, and I don't consider myself dumb. I don't have a steady enough hand to do anything accurate or good looking with it.

Well I was very familiar with ZBrush before I started learning hss so for me it was just mostly learning new ways to use old features.

I absolutely love this. This looks fantastic, fantastic lighting. I love the 'face' most of all. (: This is awesome.

Fantastic hard surface sculpt. Though, the shoulders look a but too curvy in the inner surface for that kind of material. Some more Trim Dynamic would've worked wonders here (I'm assuming you use ZBrush since you mentioned Mike Jensen's tutorial). Or was it intentional? Bent? Looked odd and really stood out though.

How do you go about it? Do you use a lot of retop like Mike Jensen and Kurt Papstein (Ikameka) or more just "free form" sculpting?

:) Thank you. I've used plenty of Trim Dynamic so it's pretty intentional. I imagined the hands and upper legs (which you don't really see here though) to be a different material than the rest of his body. Half-organic, half metallic kind of thing for easier movability. But it's a design choise too I guess, I like nonconformal things.

I retopo pretty much everything after sculpting the parts in dynamesh.

Learned a lot from Eat3d's Hard Surface Techniques 2 tutorial. Rest is trial and error really, and staring at all kinds of mechanical objects.
